Read full description of the books:
This book narrowly edges out Fyodor Dostoevsky's "The Brothers Karamazov" as the best book I have ever read. I now read this book yearly, sometimes twice a year if I cannot wait long enough to read it again. Let me say, first of all, that I have read damn near all of Michael Crichton's work, from books to speeches to magazine articles. To me, Crichton is only an above-average writer. What makes him special is the way that he thinks. Crichton is, in my opinion, one of the greatest and most innovative thinkers in human history. His stories are compelling not because of the words he uses, but because of the ideas he presents. "Travels" is a book about Crichton's journeys, both inward and outward, which helped to shape his fantastically open-minded, critical, discerning approach to the world. I first read this book in 2008. I was, at that point, someone who had not refined his thoughts about life in some time. I adopted a certain mindset around the end of my high school days which carried me through college and into the beginnings of my career. This book changed my life and my way of thinking. I learned a great deal - this is not to say that I memorized facts as one might do with a textbook. I truly learned, grew, changed because of Crichton's analysis of the things he experienced. After reading this book I began to question things that I had not questioned in a long time. "Travels" is an interesting tale about an intriguing person's unusual life. But more importantly, it is a very powerful book which, if read without judgments and preconceptions, can be wonderfully enlightening.
