Read full description of the books:
This is such a great collections of poems... (well, most of them). i really see this book as don mckay enacting the theories he puts forward in his book of essays, "vis a vis" (i really recommend reading that one, by the way). one of the major metaphors he uses in many of the poems is the moon. and i think this image of the moon sums up pretty well what he's trying to do. the moon can stand in for this sort of "wilderness" that exists all around us. we have our nice, neat, domesticated human world (with its oh-too-strong gravity); and then there's the moon, with its own gravity, that's always there (but do we pay attention?). don mckay imagines the wilderness as all that which evades our minds appropriations. and i think his poetry is an attempt to save language from becoming too domesticated - allowing our language to play in the wilderness a bit. philosophically, i think this is quite important. a lot of what we "know" is really dictated by our language. if we can keep our language more in tune with what-is (the here-and-now), then we can have better thoughts about what-is as well. we can focus our attention on this world, and see it as something other than what Western thought would domesticate it as (keep it from being alive, what it is..). and if we can have better thoughts, we can live better lives too. this is one, very noble use of poetry. also, mckay is an absolute genius of metaphors. his metaphors can be just so stunningly beautiful.. all the philosophical stuff aside, i just found these poems to be such a joy to read.
